Melissa Beck is a sculpture/installation artist and professor residing in Brea, CA. She grew up in Pacific Palisades, CA and moved to different houses every few years but mostly in the same town. While her family, school and friends stayed the same, the houses kept changing. As a child, she was drawn to obscure details about each house that became platforms for her imagination. These memories of place, mid-century design and home still carry through in her work. Her work is meant to evoke a smile, feel surprising, whimsical and guide the viewer to pause, look closely and think differently about the everyday. In many of her works she uses real products and objects that are tied to the place or culture the work is for. Her strengths lie in designing and building ambitious works that uniquely speak to the space and culture in which they are installed. She’s created large scale installations and artwork for places such as Anthropologie, Compass Diversified, Vanguard Culture, San Diego Art Institute and Fullerton Free. Other noteworthy places her art has been featured are a National Geographic special on San Diego, Friend of the Artist publication Volume 7, Vermont Studio Center and Spark & Echo Arts. She was the first Gallery Coordinator for W83 Gallery in Manhattan and a Curatorial Assistant for Lux Art Institute in Encinitas, CA. She holds an MFA in Sculpture from Pratt Institute and a BA in Studio Art from Point Loma Nazarene University.
