Caked On 2013 (full kitchen, paint)
The kitchen is a place where much life happens through constant interaction, working, and functionality. Yet in this kitchen all of that is halted. Here I have built a replica of my family’s kitchen in California. It is a place of deep familiarity and memorable comfort. Yet this kitchen and its constituents are buried beneath gallons of paint reflective of the heavily coated electric boxes, doors, and other surfaces in New York City apartments and subways. In bridging what I know on the West Coast with what intrigues me about the East Coast I have created a new space, making what was once commonplace into something dreamlike and curious, or estranged and mysterious.
